Active-duty service members, veterans, and eligible family members have access to substance use disorder treatment through TRICARE (for active duty and dependents) or through the VA health system directly (primarily for veterans), and coverage rules differ between the two.
TRICARE coverage
TRICARE generally covers medically necessary detox, inpatient and residential treatment, and outpatient counseling, though prior authorization requirements and network restrictions vary by TRICARE plan type (Prime, Select, etc.) and by region.
VA-specific care
Veterans may also be eligible for treatment directly through VA medical centers and VA-contracted community care providers, which is a separate system from TRICARE with its own eligibility and authorization process. A facility listing "Military Insurance" as accepted may work with TRICARE, VA community care referrals, or both — worth confirming which applies to your specific situation directly with the facility.
