What to Expect in Treatment

Not knowing what's coming is one of the biggest sources of anxiety before starting treatment. The specifics vary by program, but the broad shape is fairly consistent.
The first few days
Expect an intake assessment (medical history, substance use history, mental health screening), and — if detox is needed — close medical monitoring during the withdrawal period.
The first few weeks
Once stabilized, most programs settle into a routine: individual therapy, group sessions, psychoeducation about addiction and relapse, and if applicable, treatment for co-occurring conditions. Structure is intentional — routine itself is part of the treatment.
Toward discharge
Good programs start aftercare planning early, not at the last minute: identifying outpatient follow-up, sober living options if needed, and a relapse prevention plan before the person leaves.
Every program differs in specifics — this is a general outline, not a description of any particular facility.
