Veterans Treatment
Last reviewed 2026-07-18
Veterans face some distinct considerations in addiction treatment, including higher rates of co-occurring PTSD, chronic pain from service-related injuries, and unique access points through the VA health system.
VA resources
The Department of Veterans Affairs offers substance use treatment through VA medical centers, including detox, outpatient counseling, and residential programs. Many are available regardless of combat history, and some accept veterans without a service-connected disability rating.
Beyond the VA
Some veterans prefer or need care outside the VA system — through Tricare, private insurance, or veteran-specific nonprofit programs. Vet Centers (separate from VA medical centers) offer free counseling and can help with referrals.
The Veterans Crisis Line is reachable by calling 988 and pressing 1, or by texting 838255.
