LGBTQ+ Affirming Addiction Care

Last reviewed 2026-07-18

LGBTQ+ people face substance use at higher rates than the general population, often linked to minority stress, discrimination, and lack of family or community support. Treatment that doesn't account for this context can fall short — or in some cases cause harm.

What affirming care looks like

Finding the right program

It's reasonable to ask a treatment center directly about their experience with LGBTQ+ clients and their non-discrimination policy before enrolling. Some programs are LGBTQ+-specific; many general programs are also well-equipped and explicitly affirming.
